Adventure Traveler - Expedition Travel - Is It for You?

Carla’s Curated Compass

Where culture, luxury, and adventure meet to spark your next unforgettable escape.

Happy July my travel loving friends!

As a Virtuoso Adventure Focused Advisor, I wanted to share some news. Over the past few months, I've been tuning my business to focus more on my adventure travelers who are curious at their core and desire more than just a run-of-the mill cruise. They want more out of their investment in travel, and ultimately want to return home from a transformative experience. This means, I'm focusing more intently on serving my clients seeking experiences such as:

  • Custom boutique Europe - private and small group immersive tours, smaller hotels with friendly service, comfortable amenities and in highly-desirable locations
  • First-time trips to Italy - because... ITALY. IS. JUST. EVERYTHING.
  • Small-ship luxury and river crusing - sailing yachts, destination immersion with overnight stays, wine and holiday focused river sailings, or true and complete all-inclusive luxury
  • Bucket list /once-in-a-lifetime trips
  • Adventure travel - expedition travel, Northern lights, Midnight Sun hiking, helicopter sightseeing, etc.

We all know that our time is valuable and sadly limited, and the need to really focus in more on the travel planning that I am exceptionally good at and what is important to me, is a way to ensure my time is used most effectively while still providing the high level of service and experiences that my clients deserve.

I look forward to providing even more endless opportunites for true exploration!

Five Things That Might Surprise You About Expedition Travelers

This month, I want to try and break the stereotype of what may come to mind when you hear the word "Expedition Travel".

The preconception is that Expedition Travel is just for the hardcore adventurous types. You know the ones - climbing Mount Everest in Nepal, base jumping illegally in Yosemite, sky-diving or hiking for days on end. When in actuality...

  • Expedition Travel is the fastest-growing segment in cruising. According to CLIA, Passenger numbers on expedition voyages jumped 71% between 2019 and 2023, then another 22% in 2024 alone. This isn't a niche experience, it's the hottest trending type of travel.
  • The "core" traveler isn't who you'd think. Despite some rugged marketing, the typical expedition traveler is well-traveled, financially comfortable, and over 60. They are motivated by meaningful experiences, not just bragging rights and Instagram followers.
  • Women are running the show. Women make up the majority of solo travelers booking adventure trips. Some estimates put solo women travelers as high as 84%.
  • "Solo" doesn't mean "alone." On a typical Antarctic voyage, roughly 1 in 5 guests are traveling solo. Cabins are often shared to avoid a single supplement, and the camaraderie that builds on a 100-person ship is part of the appeal, not a drawback.
  • Travelers are doing actual science — not just sightseeing. "Citizen science" is a real thing on these ships now with some cruise lines logging data submissions to research projects every year or running programs from whale ID to glacier monitoring. Some even put real researchers on board guests' voyages. All this to say, as a traveling guest, you'll returned home having contributed to real research, not just photos.

So Who Actually Loves This Kind of Travel?

👉🏻 Curious people who want their vacation to mean something. NOT thrill-seekers, just people who'd rather learn something than lie on a beach.

👉🏻 Travelers who've already done the "easy" trips and want somewhere that still feels genuinely remote.

👉🏻 People who want structure and expertise handling the logistics, not a backpack-and-figure-it-out adventure.

👉🏻 Those drawn to small-group connection over big-ship anonymity. Essentially, a few dozen new friends, not a few thousand strangers.

👉🏻 People who want proof their trip mattered: data collected, a researcher's lecture, a story bigger than "I went."

And yes, luxury and adventure aren't mutually exclusive anymore. Demand for high-end yacht and expedition cruising is surging precisely because travelers want both the wild, far-flung itinerary and the five-star cabin. There are expedition cruises that fit this perfectly!

The bottom line: if any of this sounds like you, expedition travel isn't as far outside your comfort zone as you might think. Hit reply or the inquiry button below, and let's talk about whether Antarctica, the Arctic, or the Galápagos should be next on your list.
