Carla’s Curated Compass

Where culture, luxury, and adventure meet to spark your next unforgettable escape.

Hi Reader,

Every month I decide on a destination in which to focus for my newsletter. I choose a destination that I feel offers what I and my clients love most. That is, extraordinary beauty, genuine warmth, and that feeling of discovery. This month, I'm talking about Slovenia.

Slovenia is east of Italy, south of Austria, and north of Croatia and offers more than meets the eye. Think emerald rivers, medieval castles perched on staggering cliffs, and a food scene that is quietly becoming internationally recognized. It's also one of the greenest countries in Europe, a genuine draw for travelers who care about sustainable luxury.

I'm traveling there myself soon and I look forward to sharing some of her beauty with you on my Facebook and Instagram pages.

Hidden Gem City
Ptuj "Puh-TOO-ee" is Slovenia's oldest town, and almost nobody knows it

While visitors flock to Lake Bled and Ljubljana, Ptuj sits quietly in the wine-rich Styrian hills, unmarked on most itineraries. It's Slovenia's oldest recorded settlement - a layered place of Roman ruins, a hilltop castle with sweeping vineyard views, and cobblestone streets that belong entirely to the locals. In February, it hosts the oldest carnival in the country. The rest of the year, it's yours to wander in peace. Pair a visit with a tasting at a nearby Šipon wine estate and you have a half-day that will define your trip.

Where to Stay?
Grad Otočec

Few hotels in Europe can genuinely claim they're inside a medieval castle on a private island. Grad Otočec is one of them. Set on a tiny island in the Krka River, the castle dates to the 12th century and now houses Slovenia's only castle hotel with a five-star rating. The restaurant works directly with local producers and the Dolenjska wine region; the surrounding forest paths and cycling routes make it easy to fill three days without leaving the grounds. This is the kind of property you will remember for decades.

Unmissable Experience?
Private guided morning at Postojna Cave

Postojna is one of the world's largest cave systems - 15 miles of underground galleries, rivers, and formations that took five million years to build. Most visitors join the tourist train and move on. For my clients, I recommend booking a private early-morning access tour before the day-trippers arrive: just you, a specialist guide, and complete silence except for the dripping of ancient rock. The cave maintains a constant 46°F year-round, so pack a layer. A visit pairs perfectly with the nearby Predjama Castle, built literally inside a cliff face.

Slovenia makes an exceptional addition to a longer European itinerary. It could work well with a trip that starts or ends in Venice, Salzburg, or the Croatian coast. If you're thinking about 2026 or 2027 travel, now is the time to start making your plans.
